What do flood classifications mean?

Floods are classified as minor, moderate or major.

Minor flooding means low-lying areas are inundated. This impacts minor roads, low-level bridges, backyards, buildings below floor level, bicycle and pedestrian paths.

Moderate flooding means larger areas are inundated. This can affect main traffic routes, some buildings above floor level and possible evacuation required.

Major flooding means large areas are inundated. This affects many buildings above floor level, utility services and possible requires evacuations. Properties and towns are likely to be isolated and major rail and traffic routes closed.
