Community-led
support, sharing, action

Who we are

Resilient Kurilpa is a voluntary network of residents and representatives from organisations based in Kurilpa.

Kurilpa refers to the suburbs on the river-bounded peninsula of Highgate Hill, South Brisbane, West End and Hill End.

We formed in April 2022, in response to the February major flood event that inundated over 23,000 households across Meanjin (Brisbane) and impacted thousands of residents living in Kurilpa.

Our network consists of local residents and representatives from:

What we do

We support critical knowledge and resource sharing, led by frontline experiences, for people to prepare, respond, recover and plan for future floods.

Our visions

  • To nurture an informed, skilled, and connected community, empowered to rapidly and safely respond and recover to climate disaster events.

  • To support groups to learn from the past and implement practical and inclusive mitigation strategies.

  • To be a leading community in grassroots disaster resilience building and share knowledge with local and global climate disaster communities to adapt for their own contexts.

Our futures

We recognise that building resilience to flood is one urgent project among many others, including urban heat stress, drought, and cyclonic storms. Read more about Kurilpa’s locally-developed climate adaptation strategy here and here.

Acknowledgements

Resilient Kurilpa’s work draws on the experience and expertise of our local community, which has developed over decades of grassroots organisation and activism.

We give thanks to those who have documented their knowledge and shared stories about the river and its impacts, many of which can be accessed in our Resources and the Kurilpa Flood Library.

We’re grateful to Adrian Sains, Leanne Sturgess and the Riverpoint and Flow Apartments working groups whose leadership in apartment flood mitigation planning is helping others to take necessary action.

The Kurilpa Flood Library was designed from a collaborative research partnership with Paula Hardie, Uncle Willie Prince, and Resilient Kurilpa members.

The development of this website was funded by financial supporters CommunityPlus+ and generous crowdfund donors: Rachael Sarra, Mary Maher, Max Chandler-Mather, Maeve Lejeune, Bowman Paull, Janette McLeod, Sandy Vigar, Tine Joe, Vikki McLeod, Helen Beazley, Naomi Hill, Jeremy Eunson, Liam Moreland, Lynn Robinson, Tina Joe, Rachael Thomas, Alexandra Tregenza, Tegan Mortimore, Courtney Wilkinson, Elizabeth Cowrie, Frances Maguire, Louise Kruger, Yasmin Humphrey, Sian Tooker, Bob Speirs and Anonymous Donors.
