Land use planning must focus on mitigation

“As state and local governments are forced to deal with increasing populations, the pressure for increased housing stock is growing and the temptation to encroach on areas prone to natural peril risks is also increasing. The policy objectives of land use planning must change to focus on mitigation and the impacts of a disaster at the time of planning approval. Future financial losses to homeowners, businesses and the community can be avoided with better government planning and investment.”
