Gratham’s managed retreat
Gratham in Queensland is often regarded as a successful case of managed retreat. Managed retreat refers to “the purposeful, coordinated movement of people and assets out of harm’s way”. After 12 people died from the 2011 flood, the Lockyer Valley Regional Council purchased 378 hectares of land to build the new Grantham. The new town estate was constructed within 12 months, costing $18 million from federal and state governments.
