Room for the River

The risk of flooding in the Netherlands is growing. In 2007, the Dutch Government Room introduced the Room for the River program. It was an approach to floodplain development that gives more space to the river, delivered by many projects and stakeholders. It aimed to exploit the advantages of flooding and mitigate the disadvantages. The program restored the natural floodplain through river rehabilitation, sustainable river management, river flood management and river widening.
